The premise of this post was that American society is so status driven, and we often pursue very expensive degrees out of prestige, when there are other ways to earn a living. Hard work and creativity can take you farther financially than a six-figure degree with a huge student loan.
Sometimes getting to where you want to be in life takes working 17 hours a day; it doesn’t mean that you work 17 hours a day forever.
I’m not sure where you’re getting “not eating at restaurants because you’re afraid of the future” from….
Lastly, happiness is a choice, even in a crappy apartment. Some of my best memories were living in my crappy apartment in college with my friends. There was a period of time where I lived in a very nice apartment shortly after college, and I was pretty unhappy.
